Ashley Bryan, words of my life’s song

When Ashley was a little boy during the Depression, he collected bits of paper to make books and kites.  During World War II, on the beaches of Normandy , he kept pastel crayons in his gas mask.  Even when he wanted to go to college to study drawing and painting and was turned away because of the color of his skin, he just kept drawing and painting until he found a school that was more interested in the colors on his canvases than the color of his skin.  Here’s what Ashley thinks: if you put art into the world, you get beauty in return.
