I Greet The Dawn

I Greet The Dawn

Written by: Paul Lawrence Dunbar, Illustrations by: Ashley Bryan

In the Brief Biography of Paul Laurence Dunbar that precedes the selections of his poetry, Ashley Bryan tells of the problems of being a black poet at the turn of the century, of the trials and disappointments that were Dunbar’s as he tried to make a place for himself in literary America.  Dialect allowed him to use his lively wit and love of characterization, but there were other ways in which he wished to write.  He wanted to tell of love and slavery, of deprivation and pride, of religion and the strength of black heroes in the language he himself used every day.
